Family Medicine Residency

Welcome!

Welcome and thank you for your interest in Northwest Healthcare’s Family Residency Training Program!

Northwest Healthcare Tucson is a community teaching hospital system with ACGME accredited Internal Medicine and Transitional Year residency programs. You can be a part of our inaugural Family Medicine Residency Program, beginning July 1, 2025!

What makes us unique is our primary focus on resident well-being and teaching future physicians to practice medicine joyfully. Our diverse teaching faculty are dedicated to address health disparities in the exam room, in our health system, and in our communities. Faculty have extensive experience in both allopathic and osteopathic medical education and look forward to expanding GME options in Tucson.

We seek applicants from a variety of backgrounds in order to match the diversity of our patient population and our community. Core values:

  • Commitment to greatness in training and clinical consideration – giving thorough and balanced encounters
  • Determination to create a learning environment that is inclusive
  • Serve the Tucson community, particularly those that have been generally minimized

With these values, our Program offers:

  • Significant involvement in both inpatient and outpatient clinics;
  • Precepting faculty whose primary role is clinical teaching;
  • Encouragement for work-life balance;
  • A pleasant and supportive climate for learning and patient care.

Our rotation blocks provide trainee residents with foundational inpatient experiences caring for the spectrum of hospitalized adults, children, and maternity patients, coupled with immersive experiences in the outpatient center to build a robust continuity panel in the office.

The curriculum is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to provide culturally competent care to our diverse patients across their lifespans. As part of our curriculum, we have longitudinal threads on resident well-being and resiliency, point of care ultrasound (POCUS), healthcare disparities and advocacy, as well as quality improvement, practice management and patient safety.

As Program Director, my goal is to graduate Family Medicine physicians capable of practicing the full spectrum of Family Medicine. I want you to be able to practice independently in the emergency department, urgent care, hospital or outpatient setting.

Tucson’s personality has a small-town vibe, even with a population of almost one million. We have thriving food, entertainment and outdoor activities here. We are also just a short drive to Phoenix for national sports and concerts, as well as San Diego and Mexico for the beach and ocean. Surrounded by four mountain ranges, you’ll experience stunning sunrises and sunsets, creosote smells of the desert after the monsoon rains, and a welcoming community.

We hope that we have the opportunity to show you why we love our home.We seek applicants from a variety of backgrounds in order to match the diversity of our patient population and community, guided by our vision of collaboration and a mission-informed residency program.
